Acquiring Media Art
how to yeahhhhh i dunno
### How to ask the right questions when acquiring media art During the Transformation Digital Art Symposium of 2019 Marije Verduijn presented her advice to the audience on how to ask the right questions for acquiring media artworks. Verduijn, who is a curator at the Utrecht Centraal Museum, took the example of a work by Pipilotti Rist. The Centraal Museum bought the work Expecting in 2001. However when reinstalling the work in the museum a decade later they came to the conclusion that they did not ask the right questions back when they acquired the work. Verduijn said that they did not have future installations in mind when acquiring and if she were to acquire it again would put more time and effort into the artist interview and acquiring instructions, certificates, scripts and other documentation alongside the artwork. ### Contracts, Templates and Factsheets Media art has has been around for more than half a century already, but the acquisition process is still in its infancy. Artists, such as Jan Robert Leegte, were still making physical representations of their online works in 2016 because collectors were not interested in art that existed merely on the web or in digital files. Even though collectors and institutions are slowly becoming more comfortable with acquiring media art; they could still use some help. LI-MA has created, in cooperation with many artists, collectors and institutions in their network, many factsheets and templates for acquisitions documents and acquisition contracts. Whether they concern an explanation of different analogue formats or a template for analyzing net art, you can find them there. If you have a specific question about acquisition that is not answered in the documents below do not hesitate to contact us. You can do so by clicking the button below.
